Miele Dishwasher Error Codes

Dejan Josipovic

Miele has been manufacturing dishwashers with German engineering since 1929 and has been available in Australia since the subsidiary Miele Australia commenced operation in Australia in 1980 and currently have Fully Integrated Dishwashers, Built-In Dishwashers, Freestanding Dishwashers and Semi Integrated Dishwashers.

Quality is more important to them than quantity, legacy is more important than short-term profit, and they want to manufacture the best products. However, even the best dishwashers break, fail and need some maintenance. If your Miele dishwasher starts to display an error code, it means that something needs to be repaired or that some maintenance is required. Some error codes are simple to repair, such as cleaning your filter, while others are complex and require the assistance of a professional dishwasher repair technician.

There are many different Miele dishwasher models with digital displays, so if you see the dishwasher display an error code, it is a good idea to note the error code that is flashing or displaying. Don’t pull the power from the dishwasher if it shows an error code. Removing the power plug will erase the fault code but will not fix the problem.

Like most people, when something goes wrong, we turn to Google for answers which can often lead people astray, especially when diagnosing dishwashers and error codes. We always recommend that a trained dishwasher repair technician complete the repair. We have compiled a list of the most common Miele dishwasher error codes and their meaning.

Please keep in mind that multiple error codes can be caused by the same part depending on where in the cycle stage the dishwasher faults out.

Miele Dishwasher Error Code F01 - Water/Heating NTC or Leads Short-Circuited

The F01 error code refers to an issue with the temperature sensor, which is a simple NTC thermistor. After the F01 error code is registered, the heating will not be activated, and the rinse aid will not be dispensed. To repair and clear the F01 error code, the technician must test the temperature sensor and its leads for continuity. At 20°C the temperature sensor resistance should be approximately 14.9kΩ and at 25°C approximately 12kΩ (guide figures only). It should be noted that the plug connections should be checked.

Miele Dishwasher Error Code F02 - Water/Heating NTC or Leads Open-Circuited

The F02 error indicates that the temperature sensor and control module have lost communication, in other words, an open circuit. After the F02 error code is registered, the heating will not be activated, and the rinse aid will not be dispensed. To repair and clear the F02 error code, the technician must check the temperature sensor and its leads for continuity. At 20°C the temperature sensor resistance should be approximately 14.9kΩ and at 25°C approximately 12kΩ (guide figures only). It should be noted that the plug connections should be checked, and if necessary, replace the temperature sensor with a Miele original part.

Miele Dishwasher Error Code F11 - Drainage Fault

The F11 is one of the more common Miele dishwasher error codes we see in the field, which indicates that the Miele dishwasher did not drain the wastewater into the sewer. The four most likely causes of the fault are a blockage at the connection to the drain pipe, a clogged filter, a faulty drain pump, a kinked hose, the ball in the non-return valve in the sump has not opened (e.g., jammed), an object obstructing the drain pump or heater relay faulty, resulting in low pressure.

What occurs after each drain pump step, the circulation/wash pump operates for 2 seconds, and the heater pressure switch checks the water level. If the water level is too high, the drainage time is extended. If, after a further check, the water level is still too high, the program is interrupted, the fault code is saved, and the drain pump is activated. Fault code F11 is also displayed if the heater relay is not activated after the fault code F51 register check.

To repair and clear the F11 error code, the technician must check the drain hose for blockages, check the sump drain, clean the non-return valve in the sump, check the filters, clean the drain pump and its impeller, check the heater pressure switch for blockages and correct switching point, check the drain pump for correct operation, check the heater pressure switch and replace it if necessary.

Miele Dishwasher Error Code F12 - Water Intake Fault at Start of Step

The F12 and the below F13 error codes are very similar as they relate to a problem with water flow into the Miele dishwasher. However, the F12 fault is at the start of the step to intake water. During the first 5 seconds of any water intake step, at least 15 pulses from the flow meter should be registered. If this given number of pulses is not detected, the display shows the F12 error message. The water inlet valve will be activated at 10-second intervals for one hour.

The drain pump will also be activated at intervals to prevent the possibility of the appliance overflowing. All other dishwasher components remain inactive. The F12 error can be caused by a closed shutoff valve, a Water inlet valve defective, no water supply to the building, an Electrical connection open-circuited, and the flow meter not providing any pulses.

To clear the F12 error code, the technician must check the water inlet valve, ensure that the shutoff valve is open, ensure there is water flow to the property, ensure the flow meter is pulsing and check the plug and wiring connections.

Miele Dishwasher Error Code F13 - Water Intake Fault at End of Step

The F13 error code indicates a water intake fault, as the program has been interrupted and the drain pump is operated. This fault occurs when the desired number of pulses, which varies depending on the program, has yet to be detected within a particular time (maximum 4 minutes).

If the selected program starts with a water softener flushing cycle, the fault code register check is carried out earlier. In the event of a fault, the selected program is interrupted after approximately 30 seconds, and the error code is indicated. To repair and clear the F13 error code, the technician must check the water inlet valve, the flow meter, the WPS valve, and the water flow pressure.

Miele Dishwasher Error Code F14 - Water Intake Fault: Heater Pressure Switch

The F14 error code indicates a problem with the heater pressure switch, which can result in another water intake fault. If this is malfunctioning, it will cause the appliance to overfill, as it's responsible for measuring and heating the water level inside the dishwasher. What usually occurs is that a wash program is interrupted, and the drain pump is operated. With the circulation/wash pump running after a water intake step, the heater pressure switch is checked to ensure sufficient water pressure exists in the wash water circuit. For this, the heater relay must have been activated.

The F14 error can be caused by a defective heater pressure switch, faulty circulation/wash pump motor, wash motor pump pressure too low, circulation/wash pump blockage or obstruction, foreign objects in the heater pressure switch, defective flow meter, circulation/wash pump winding overheating, winding protection has cut out, after a water intake step, heater pressure switch has not opened switching steps 11–12 and 21–22 which starts the anti-stiction routine, faulty motor capacitor and contacts on the heater pressure switch short-circuited.

To repair and clear the F14 error code, the technician must test the the WPS valve, heater pressure switch, connection plug and wiring harness, circulation/wash pump for foreign objects, circulation pump capacitor, flow meter, wash pump, and motor capacitor.

Miele Dishwasher Error Code F15 - Water Intake Fault: Hot Water

The F15 error code indicates a problem with the water supply. It will appear when hot water is supplied to a Miele dishwasher. The dishwasher must be connected to a cold water supply to fix this fault.

Miele Dishwasher Error Code F18 - Flow Meter Stationary State Monitor

The F18 error code indicates a problem with the inlet valve as the valve is open when it should not allow water to flow into the appliance, and unexpected pulses from the flow meter are detected. Unexpected pulses from the flow meter are also detected when the water inlet valve is not activated.

The main causes of an F15 error are a faulty inlet valve and a faulty flow meter. To clear the F15 error code, the technician must check the water inlet valve and check the flow meter.

Miele Dishwasher Error Code F19 - Flow Meter Stiff/Not Turning Freely

The F19 error code indicates a malfunction with the water flow sensor. Often this error is displayed when the sensor tube is clogged with debris or the sensor has burnt out and needs to be changed. To repair and clear the F19 error code, the technician must check the flow meter to ensure the tube is not blocked or burnt out. If the flow meter is burnt out, it will need to be replaced.

Miele Dishwasher Error Code F24 - Heater Relay Contact

The error code indicates a problem with the heater relay. The heater relay contacts are checked when the circulation/wash pump is not operating. The fault is registered if the supply voltage is applied to the electronic's inputs. This can be caused by the heater relay contacts fusing, moisture in the heater relay or a fault in the plug on the exit side of the heater relay. If a fault is found with the heater relay, it will need to be replaced.

Miele Dishwasher Error Code F24 - Heater Relay Contact

Miele Dishwasher Error Code F25 - Target Temperature Fault

The F25 error indicates a low water heating rate or an inability to reach the selected program's temperature. This issue is mainly caused by a faulty heater relay, defective heater, or excess quantity of detergent or rinse aid dispensed. To repair and clear the F25 error code, the technician must test the heater, and check the heater relay solenoid voltage (12VDC) from the control board and the heater relay solenoid.

Miele Dishwasher Error Code F26 - Boiling Protection

The F26 error occurs on Miele dishwashers in an emergency situation when the heater tries to bring the temperature of the water in the system to a boil. There is a special sensor that has been installed to prevent this which will interrupt the cycle and activate the drain pump. The reason is a malfunction of the temperature sensor where the water has exceeded 90°C.

The problem is solved by replacing the temperature sensor. To repair and clear the F19 error code, the technician must determine which component of the dishwasher is causing it to over heat. It could be the control board, NTC temperature sensor or the heater relay.

Miele Dishwasher Error Code F32 - Door Lock Does Not Close

The F32 error code will be shown on a Miele dishwasher if the door lock won't close. This issue may arise if the door is closed physically too fast. If the appliance has an automated door-closing function, this may be the source of the issue.

Miele Dishwasher Error Code F33 - Door Lock Does Not Open

Miele dishwashers will display the F33 error number if the door does not open. To eliminate the error code and door fault, the lock or door latch must be inspected and evaluated, as it is occasionally possible to fix it by cleaning or replacing the spring, although replacement is typically necessary.Miele Dishwasher F33 Error Fault Code

Miele Dishwasher Error Code F36 - Door Lock Switch Defective

Miele Dishwasher Error Code F40 - Electronic Fault

The F40 error occurs on Miele dishwashers due to an electronic fault, such as damaged control board. This error can be repaired and cleared by replacing the defective control board.

Miele Dishwasher Error Code F40 - Electronic Fault

Miele Dishwasher Error Code F42 - Line Frequency Registration Fault

The error F42 indicates a problems with the main power supply. A check is carried out to ensure that the line frequency is within certain valid ranges (50 ± 5 Hz or 60 ± 5 Hz). This error is displayed when it cannot clearly be established which valid range is applicable. To repair and clear this error the main power supply should be checked by a specialist.

Miele Dishwasher Error Code F47 - Faulty Electronic Interface

The error F47 indicates that there is a faulty interface between the selection display (BAE) and the control power electronic (SLT) which is the main control board. To repair and clear this error, the dishwasher should be restarted by turning the power off for two minutes and back on. If you have done this several times and the error keeps coming back, you will need to inspect and replace the control boards and possible wiring that connects the two.

Miele Dishwasher Error Code F47 - Faulty Electronic Interface

Miele Dishwasher Error Code F51 - Heater Pressure Switch

The error F51 indicates that the control module has stopped receiving the correct signals from the temperature sensor. As a result, the module stops washing dishes and starts the pump, which starts pumping water. Several parts need to be tested by the technician, such as the heater relay, heater relay solenoid, the connection from the heater relay to the electronic module open-circuited, the heater pressure switch, the link from the heater pressure switch to the control board and foreign objects in heater pressure switch.

Miele Dishwasher Error Code F52 - Heater Pressure Switch Reset During Heating

Miele Dishwasher Error Code F63 - Slide Shutter Fault

Miele Dishwasher Error Code F67 - Circulation/Wash Pump Speed Too Low

The error F67 notifies the user that the circulation/wash pump is operating at a high or maximum speed. Three possible causes can cause the error: a broken circulation/wash pump, the connection between it, a faulty control module, or the bus of the control board has burnt out. As a result, the correct tests will need to be performed by a dishwasher technician on the circulation/was pump, wiring and control board and determine what needs to be replaced.

Miele Dishwasher Error Code F68 -  Circulation/Wash Pump Operating After Switch-Off

The F68 error appears on the screen of the dishwasher when the circulation/wash pump stops responding to the control module's commands for shutting down. At the same time, the pump continues to operate as if nothing had happened. The solution to repair and clear the F68 error is to check and test the circulation pump and its wiring and, if necessary, change the circulation/wash pump.

Miele Dishwasher Error Code F69 - Circulation/Wash Pump Blocked

The F69 error indicates that there is a fault with the circulation/wash pump and can be caused by a defective heater pressure switch, a defective heater relay or due to the circulation pressure being too low because the circulation/wash pump is blocked by foreign objects. To clear the F15 error code, the technician must check and test the the heater pressure switch, the heater relay and remove and clean the circulation pump to be able to remove any foreign objects that may be present.

Miele Dishwasher Error Code F69 - Wash Pump Blocked

Miele Dishwasher Error Code F70 - Float Switch Fault

The F70 error indicates that a float switch detected water in the dishwasher's drip tray, located at the base, which activated the waterproof system. The dishwasher drain pump will continuously operate even after the dishwasher has been shut off. The drain pump can only be deactivated by disconnecting the power supply connection.

To repair and clear the F70 error code, the technician must dry out the drip pan and return the float switch to its correct position. The dishwasher will then need to be tested for leaks on a short cycle first. It is recommended that if there is no leak, you run the dishwasher on the longest cycle to determine the location of the leak. Sometimes, leaks will occur after the dishwasher has reached a certain temperature.

Miele Dishwasher Error Code F78 - Circulation/Wash Pump Fault

The F78 error indicates that the circulation/wash pump is blocked, has become dry and is stuck together, interrupted connection between the electronic and the circulation/wash pump, faulty wash pump (low or excess voltage, blocked, etc.) or the electronic frequency converter is defective.

We recommend that before you pull the dishwasher apart you first perform the following steps. If the below tip doesn't work the dishwasher will need to be disassembled and the wash motor will need to be assessed and tested.

    1. Heat up 2 cups of tap water in the microwave for 3 minutes.
    2. Do not use hot water as it is not hot enough!
    3. Remove filter assembly from the bottom of the dishwasher.
    4. Pour hot water into the sump of the dishwasher and add 2-4 drops of rinse aid to the hot water.
    5. Let it sit for 5-7 minutes.
    6. Access service mode and clear all fault codes.
    7. Start a new cycle after the time has elapsed. The hot water/rinse aid will drain out.
    8. Circulation/wash pump will start after the dishwasher has filled with water.(Approximately 2 minutes).
    9. Circulation/wash pump should operate as normal.
    10. If the pump has not started after 2 minutes, try the hot water/rinse aid mixture again.
    11. If the pump has still not started the circulation of water, then set up service toreplace the pump.

Miele Dishwasher Error Code F79 - Circulation/Wash Pump Communication Fault

The F79 error is a communication fault between the wash motor frequency converter and control module which can be caused by three main areas.

      1. Circulation/Wash Pump
      2. Control Board (PCB)
      3. Wiring Between Components

The first area the technician should start to check is the wiring and look out for any wires that have black burn marks on them, any crushed or strained wiring and all the connections to the board and pump, look inside the connection that they have not corroded. The plastic protector may look ok but the terminal inside may have corroded which may be your issue.

Secondly, the technician should physically check the control board and look for any burn marks on the board, as this is an easy sign of a fault with the board. If defects are found on the board, or a component has burned out, then you know this is the problem.

Lastly, the technician should physically check the circulation/wash pump for defects and also test the windings on the motor. Checks should also be done for voltage at the electronic (SLT) output and input, at the wiring harness and at the circulation/wash pump. If faults are found the technician should carry out appropriate remedial action (replacement of the electronic, wiring harness or circulation/wash pump).

Miele Dishwasher Error Code F85 - Slide Shutter Signal Change Fault

Miele Dishwasher Error Code F86 - Lid Contact – Salt

Miele Dishwasher Error Code F87 - Softener Sensor Fault

Miele Dishwasher Error Code F88 - Turbidity Sensor Fault

The F88 error indicates that a false reading or no values from turbidity sensor have been detected. The causes of the error can be that the sensor is clogged, the connection between the control module and the turbidity sensor may be broken, or this sensor has burnt out.

To repair and clear the F88 error code, the technician must check the sensor itself, its wiring, and also clean it with a cloth if it is dirty. It may also be necessary to replace the conductive sensor pipe.

Miele Dishwasher Error Code F88 - Turbidity Sensor Fault

Miele Dishwasher Error Code F91 - Load Size Registration Inactive

The F91 error indicates a breakdown of the sensor that determines the number of dishes in the baskets of the dishwasher. In most cases, an error does not stop the operation of the dishwasher and after a short pause, the program starts successfully.

If you want this function to work correctly on your dishwasher, you need to replace the load sensor. Please also ensure that the dishwasher is loaded correctly as issues can be caused if water get collected in tipped-over dishes (e.g., large bowls).
