Dryers are important laundry appliances in every home. While many of us are familiar with electric dryers, only a few know that there are different types of dryers available. This makes it difficult to choose the right one for them, especially if this is their first time buying one.

Condenser Dryer

Condenser dryers work by drawing air around the unit and passing it through a condenser. The condenser then warms up the air and sends it to the drum through the dryer as heated air, which helps to dry the clothes. 

This is different from the standard dryers, which increase the dryer's internal temperature with the use of a heating device. 

As a result, condenser dryers usually have reduced internal temperatures. So if you're using a condenser dryer, then you will require extra time to dry your clothes.

Heat Pump Condenser Dryer

The heat pump condenser is a new advancement in drying technology. Unlike condenser dryers, they dry your clothes using a heat pump. Their major strength is a refrigerant system that has both cold and hot coils. The hot coils help to increase the temperature of the remaining air when it returns to the drum. This helps to reheat the air for further use. The cold coils, on the other hand, help to condense the air from the pump, release moisture, and generate heat. Heat pump dryers are highly efficient and use less energy.

  • Unlike regular condenser dryers, they don't blow humid or hot air into the room.
  • They use low temperatures.

Vented Dryers

Vented dryers are the most popular type of dryer in the market. They heat the air and send it to the drum. Once the hot air comes out of the venting duct, it becomes fresh and moist. 

Unfortunately, these types of dryers don't dry cloth properly and may lead to a muggy laundry room.

Factors to Consider When Choosing a Dryer

Vented or Ventless

It is crucial to determine if you want a vented or ventless dryer. Vented Dryers use a heating device to elevate the temperature of the air. They use aluminum ducts to release the generated steam outside the room. This eliminates the chances of having a moldy or hot room.

Meanwhile, ventless dryers don't require a venting duct. Therefore, you can place your dryers anywhere without worrying about space. However, they may take a while to dry your clothes. If you have enough space in your room, you can consider vented dryers; otherwise, ventless dryers may be more appropriate for you.

Full-Size or Compact

Clothes dryers come in two different sizes. You can either go for the full size or the compact size. While the full size has a width of 27 to 29 inches, compact-size dryers are usually within 24 inches wide and are electric-powered. To decide the best size for you, you must consider the size of your laundry and also the size of your laundry room. 

If you have a small space and your laundry is usually small, then your best option is a compact-size dryer. However, if you do heavy laundry and you have a large space, you can decide to go for the full-size dryer. Ensure you consider breathing space before making your decision.

Gas or Electric

Choosing between a gas or an electric dryer is one of the most important factors to consider. Their power requirements and costs are different. Gas dryers are more expensive; however, they are more energy-efficient since they use propane or natural gas to fuel the heating system instead of electricity.

Gas dryers also require a venting duct; therefore, it may be complicated for small apartments. Meanwhile, electric dryers are powered by electricity and use aluminum heating coils. This tends to increase the energy cost; however, they are cheaper to buy and easier to install.

Load Capacity

Aside from your laundry size, you must also consider the capacity of the dryer before buying one. However, your laundry size will determine the load capacity of your dryer. A full-size dryer has a load capacity of about 8.3 cubic feet. Still, you can go for a mega-capacity dryer which has a load capacity of about 9.2 cubic feet if you wash a lot of clothes regularly. 

Generally, you must choose a dryer whose load capacity is twice that of your washing machine. If your dryer has a capacity smaller than the washing machine, you may be unable to dry all your clothes at once. On the other hand, if it has a bigger capacity, you may be wasting energy, thereby increasing your energy bills.

There are different dryers specific to meet different needs. Therefore, consider your needs before you make a choice.
